But before that happened she and Jerry had several phone conversations which unknown to him she recorded. The feds later confiscated the recording and what I’m writing below are snippets of what transpired. At this time Jerry has only been through the trial where he accepted a plea. Soon after going to prison, he and Karla divorce and that’s when she goes to Kentucky and begins selling drugs to support her habit.
I’ll begin the recording ( made in Feb, 1988) where Bonnie is talking about Karla’s testimony in the Kentucky trial. She’s reading a newspaper.
Bonnie: “Cocaine dealer expected to testify. Karla Espinal, whose recent testimony helped convict five people on federal cocaine charges is expected to take the witness stand today at another drug trial. Ms. Espinal,28, will be the government’s key witness against two of her former friends on trial for trafficking in cocaine.”
This entire conversation goes on in rather crude language with Bonnie discussing Karla’s love of coke and whoring. She graphically describes Karla’s fetishes and what a disgusting person she is. She talks about Karla’s willing to lie about friends and tell the feds exactly what they want to hear.
The next thing I’ll include is a letter Bonnie wrote to friend in July, 1989. By now Bonnie is in prison, thanks to Karla. Again, I’ll include only parts of the letter. She’s in the middle of a complaint when she says, “Sometimes I feel like joining the government’s lies and going home—( they wanted her to say something against Jerry, to back up what Karla has already said) but I just won’t lower myself to that.”
Her statement about government lies is important because it was to a friend with no hard connection to Jerry. In my opinion, after reading a lot of material, she was being truthful. It is apparent from this and subsequent letters that she is not doing well in prison---her daughter is also in jail, thanks to Karla---and is susceptible to further government pressure. And that is why she eventually testified against Jerry because the feds released both her and her daughter.
I’ll try to explain how this plays out in other posts and include her testimony. But to fully understand how the federal prosecutors will do anything to win, you need to understand Karla Espinal as a person and then ask yourself how anyone could grant her immunity to testify at a dog trial, much less a human. Whether people are guilty or not, she should not be allowed as a witness.
