The bombing trial:
The Offense
The case originated in 1986 when an ATF agent learned that a transmission tower in Georgia had been damaged by an explosion, similar to another transmission tower explosion two days earlier. A few months later, a confidential informant told authorities that the explosions were the work of a man connected to Jerry LeQuire. Further investigation showed the Jerry had been convicted of a bombing incident in 1980. Next, authorities learned that Karla Espinal, bitter ex-wife, was giving out information linking Jerry and his family to the crime. Then, Bonnie Anders, a former associate of Jerry( see previous posts) was also cooperating----for this she received a get out of jail card. They said there were plans to blow up a nuclear power plant, an airport, a dam, and a Navy ship, along with other transmission towers. These events were going to seem like the act of terrorists, who would later be defined as from South America, and Jerry with his Colombian contacts would identify----for his freedom. The government claimed this was an elaborate form of blackmail for his own get out of jail card.
Bonnie Anders, because of her experience with coal mining, was to obtain the dynamite, while Karla would make sure they had a South American stooge to take the fall. According to Bonnie, she and Jerry talked about this several times over the telephone. ( None of this was recorded although she had recorded most of their other conversations.) She also tried to find a house for the stooge to live until it was time for his capture. During this time they were in conversations with Jerry and others. However, they had to find a new stooge because he wanted 250 grand upfront to stay in the house. (He thought he was guarding cocaine.)
In late 1985, two suitcases containing remote controlled bombs were brought to Karla’s home in Maryville, TN.
