When the planes plunged into the World Trade Center, it was later discovered that one of the pilots had been drinking prior to the hi-jacking. Why would a devout Muslim, a man so fanatic in his belief that he would give up his life, drink alcohol which is against his rules? Other similar events have occurred....a Jewish fanatic dined on pork before killing innocent people, etc. Well, it may boil down to something Paul addressed in one of his letterS where he was arguing that just because you were saved by Grace, that didn't mean you were to continue to sin so that Grace may abound. It was the same problem the Jewish believers faced---once they had been embraced by God they were no longer held to the standards handed down to Moses. And time has done little to dampen this belief. In fact, it has strengthened.
Jump forward to the 1970's when in the west the Fundamentalist Movement began to increase. Organizations like the Southern Baptist Convention, Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell, etc began to popularize the idea that those who had the right idea of God and Jesus were under attack. They made it a battle for God---their God was the right God and therefore their beliefs were the right beliefs. As their numbers grew, they began to punish anyone who didn't fall in line. Universities had their funding cut if they dared not follow in lockstep, Pastors were deemed heretics if they had even the slightest odor of being open minded. We all experienced this in our churches.
Well, this movement was also going on in other religions. Fundamentalism was on the rise as its leaders used the same tactics as in the west----it's us against them and since "them" outnumbers "us" we have to be radical But instead of cutting off money, they cut off heads. 9/11 was proclaimed by bin Laden as showing two camps: one followed the true God and one didn't. Sound familiar?? Even many of the western Fundamentalists said 9/11 was the result of America falling away from God.
So, Fundamentalism spawned an age of religious piety which could turn militant with the slightest nudge. A leader saying that abortion was murder would inspire people to blow up abortion clinics and kill doctors. While in other religions, young boys would strap bombs to their chest and kill people in restaurants. Think about that.
