Jerry And His CIA Friend

When I told Jerry of my discovery that Hank Maierhoffer was CIA, he just smiled. Maierhoffer had been a trusted friend for over a year; Jerry took his son flying frequently and Maierhoffer was a confidante. So, I expected a stronger reaction to the news. Jerry said, “I have nothing but admiration for those guys. They are expected to go into some very dangerous situations and associate with some heavy hitters.  Hank was a very smart man and I have no hard feelings toward him.”

It took me a time to come to grips with his statement, but then I finally understood that Maierhoffer was just a player in the “game.” He hadn’t betrayed Jerry, as some others had done; he had simply done his job. And Jerry respected that.

But I wonder, now that so much has been discovered, if Maierhoffer hadn’t been instrumental in an assassination attempt on Jerry’s life. The facts seem to support it, but of course, there will never be absolute proof.
