Inside the Judge's Chambers

Thought you might be interested in some of the behind the scenes conversations in Jerry’s trial. This takes place in the judge’s chambers, the morning after Karla Espinal’s first day of testimony. Segrest is a federal prosecutors and Bailey is F. Lee Bailey, Jerry’s attorney.

Segrest:  In Karla’s testimony, there are references to the hiring of Bailey as the attorney for LeQuire, amount of money delivered, how money was paid. A trip to an island in the Bahamas, social visit to Bailey’s island. There will be testimony that when she and Jerry were to get married that it couldn’t be done without some evidence that she was pregnant.

Judge:  Well, it’s already come in.

Segrest: Well, it’s going to come in clearer because there had to be a court order to get them married.

Bailey: Yes, but it had nothing to do with pregnancy. This whole pregnant thing, if you think that’s on my back, you are wrong.  I never knew anything about that urine.

Segrest:  At any rate,we are going to bring out that part of it, but I will keep away from---

Bailey: And as far as the social thing, you can bring it out if you want, you have a lying witness who is going to blow up in your face, and I don’t want it to look like the government orchestrated it. There’s nothing social about it; you think I want a two-bit hooker hanging around my premises, you are sadly mistaken.

Segrest:  It was a business visit?
.
Segrest and Bailey were at each other’s throat the entire trial, and this is just a small example. Segrest tried to tie Bailey into lying, or cheating, for Jerry, while Bailey attempted to paint Segrest as a man who would do anything to win, even allow his witnesses to knowingly lie.

If this kind of stuff interests you, let me know and I'll write more
